WHICH WAY TO GO? DISCIPLESHIP, INDOCTRINATION OR BRAINWASHING (Mt 28:19)
– DISCIPLESHIP in Christianity is a process where a person embraces the teachings of Christ in order to also spread them. This process is both relational i.e. the disciple is helped to develop a personal relationship with Christ and it is also pedagogical in that it involves theoretical aspects which need to be learned. In both cases the disciple has the power of choice to embrace or not to embrace. The approach of discipleship is both to convince and to convert rather than to indoctrinate or to brainwash. INDOCTRINATION is a process of inculcating ideas and attitudes whereby the indoctrinated person is not expected to question or critically examine the doctrine or ideology they have learned. The purpose is to forcibly or coercively cause people to act and think on the basis of a certain ideology or doctrine. In this case the outcome is to produce hybrid people with a partisan doctrinal or ideological point of view. BRAINWASHING is similar to INDOCTRINATION. It is also known as Mind Control or Coercive Persuasion which refers to an indoctrination process which results in an impairment of autonomy, an inability to think independently or make independent decisions. This brainwashing process nullifies freedom of choice and action. Apparently any human being is susceptible to such manipulation. Of late statistics of victims of indoctrination and brainwashing are are growing at an alarming rate in Africa. Unfortunately major practitioners of the two evils are POLITICIANS and PREACHERS. LORD HAVE MERCY.
