Prophet Jeremiah is sometimes called the WEEPING PROPHET because of his prophetic utterances which are full of laments. Besides lamenting for the people of Judah, he also laments over his personal experiences as a prophet. A LAMENT was a common expression of sorrow, bitterness and distress over something. I CALL IT VERBALISED BITTERNESS. In this particular context, Jeremiah is bitter about the lack of effectiveness of his prophetic warnings against the people of God. Instead of people changing their ways, they ridicule and persecute Jeremiah because of his prophecies. The setting is like a court-room where Jeremiah is prosecuting God. Check out his complaints:
– Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
– Why do all the faithless live at ease?
– You have planted them and they have taken root
– They grow and bear fruit
– You are always on their lips but far from their hearts
– Yet you know me!!!!!!!
Could it be that your situation resonates with that of Prophet Jeremiah? You have been serving God and living for him faithfully all these years. You have been paying your tithes and supported all other Kingdom related ventures with all your heart. You have been preaching the whole counsel of God. But instead of you reaping the fruits of your labour, nothing is working out for you. The wicked are prospering and are living at ease. Moreover the wicked are actually mocking you, your God and the Church you are fellowshipping at. Just like Jeremiah you have become bitter with anything to do with Church or God. Instead of bringing words of comfort to Jeremiah, God says, IT ISN’T OVER YET. If you have raced with man on foot and they have wearied you, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO RACE WITH THE HORSES? If you stumble in safe country, HOW WILL YOU MANAGE IN THE THICKETS OF THE JORDAN? Get out of that bitterness, God has a greater plan for you. You are about to be elevated to RACE WITH THE HORSES. YOU ARE A THOROUGHBRED CHRISTIAN WHO HAS THE STAMINA TO RACE WITH THE HORSES. Refuse to be wearied by human beings. MAY THE WORD OF THE LORD BE JUST LIKE A FIRE SHUT UP IN YOUR BONES (Jeremiah 20:9)
