THE BIGGEST LOSERS (Ephesians 5:15-16)

07 Jul

The greatest gift God gave to every human being is time. We all have twenty four hours a day whether you are rich or poor, old or young, black or white, male or female, Jew or Gentile, Christian or a non-Christian. The biggest losers in life are those who become unwise in the way they use their time. There are a lot of busybodies in society but on evaluation of their stewardship of time they are found wanting. Some of these time wasters are sincere people but they are sincerely wrong. Paul urges the Ephesian Community to REDEEM THEIR TIME BECAUSE THE DAYS ARE EVIL. What Paul said to the Ephesians is equally relevant to the twenty-first century because this is a sophisticated era with sophisticated evil days. The mention of evil days here should not discourage us but rather motivate us to redeem time. Time is of essence to wise people because 24 hours a day is too short to waste. We have to make the best of it. There are no two ways about time, USE IT OR LOSE IT. Paul uses two Greek words which shed light to our understanding of this portion of scripture. The Greek word for REDEEM is EXAGORAZO meaning to buy out of the MARKET, to diligently get the best deals or best bargains out of what you buy in the Marketplace. The Greek word for TIME is KAIROS meaning opportunity, opportune time, the opportune moment or pregnant time. In modern language Paul is speaking like a Business and Missional Strategist or Consultant. He urges the Ephesians to put their eyes on the MARKETPLACE because it was an economic trade centre then and now. The Marketplace was a centre of activity and public life in Roman Culture. It was also a place where financial decisions were made. Buyers and sellers of all kinds of merchandise were found here. Beggars, thieves and prostitutes also frequented the Marketplace. Paul was encouraging Christians to spend part of their time in the Marketplace looking for best deals and best bargains thus take advantage of opportunities that avail themselves. There was no better place to watch out for opportunities other than the Marketplace. Could it be that the reason why a lot of Church folks are either poor or just average is because their minds are limited to the four walls of their Place of Worship? Could it be that our Churches are not growing because instead of going to the Marketplace where people are, we are busy enjoying the wonderful presence of God with the assurance that where two or three are gathered He is there also? Could it be that instead of being a place of empowerment to go to the Marketplace, the Church has become a place of entertainment? Could it be that the Church has become a Religious Market on its own where Preachers are fishing from one fish pond to fill another fish pond and assume that they are winning souls for the Kingdom of God? These questions are not there to downplay the importance of Church gatherings but rather to challenge Christians to go down to the Marketplace and see strategic opportunities God has in store for them. Indeed it is true to say that the BIGGEST LOSERS IN LIFE ARE THOSE WHO DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BARGAINS IN THE MARKETPLACE. Check out the advantage of being in the Marketplace:
# The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities not only to earn money but to make money.
# The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities to meet your destiny helpers.
The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities to spread the good news of Jesus Christ.
# The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities to influence society.
# The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities to add value to society.
# The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities to excel in life.
# The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities to impact and change lives.
# The Marketplace is full of strategic opportunities to celebrate life.
