The book of Esther serves to chronicle how an orphan girl from the Jewish community in the then Persian Empire under King Ahasuerus, ended up as Queen of Persia in place of Vashti. It took a rigorous process of selecting beautiful virgin girls throughout the Persian empire and one of these candidates was Esther who had been adopted by Mordecai. The Bible says that she was lovely in FORM AND FEATURES i.e. body shape and facial features. But being lovely in form and features was not good enough to be selected to become the queen of the land. Esther together with the other girls needed to undergo one year of beauty treatments, the first six months with oil and myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics. Could it be that the Christian community is full of believers who are lovely in form and features? They have the form and features of spirituality. They have the form and features of lovely husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, men, women, girls, boys etc. But these are not enough hence the need for the process of making disciples out of such Christians. Peter in the same vein challenges women (Bride of Christ) not to let their adornment be limited to the outside i.e. arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel but to also focus on inner beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. The rise of modern popular hermeneutics in the form of PROSPERITY GOSPEL has made the Bride of Christ (Church) to concentrate on OUTER BEAUTY at the expense of INNER BEAUTY. While I strongly subscribe to the God who supplies our needs according to His riches in glory, I believe that such a view should be balanced with a consciousness about eternity hence the need for inner beauty. Spiritual Cosmetology should be prioritised in the same way we prioritise OUTWARD APPEARANCE. I am of the opinion that Esther did not win the heart of the King through OUTER BEAUTY only but this should have been combined with INNER BEAUTY of a gentle and quiet spirit. As you go about your day to day life, have a balanced Christian lifestyle. Always treat yourself with a double dosage for outer and inner beauty.
