DOGS, PIGS, PEARLS AND HOLY THINGS (Matthew 7:6)

27 Sep

For many years I found this verse difficult to understand until recently when I observed some amazing revelation which I shall try to share VOETSTOOTS (AS IT IS) without causing any offence. Rightly put this verse may be read this way, ‘If we give what is holy to scavenging dogs, they may attack us and if we throw pearls to wild pigs, they may trample them underfoot’. This is a metaphorical and proverbial saying where dogs and pigs are the same kind of people and what is holy and pearls refer to the kingdom message. Whilst we have a mandate to take the gospel to the whole world, we have a responsibility to maintain its value and our value. It’s true that the gospel which we preach is free but it is not cheap. It is anathema to allow scavenging dogs and wild pigs (metaphorical language) to belittle the value of the gospel message and the gospel messenger. We cannot afford to persist offering holy stuff and pearls of great price to those who have no appreciation for it because they will devalue us and desacralise our message. Jesus had those who violently oppose the gospel message in mind when he instructed his disciples to shake off the dust and go if their message is not received (Matthew 10:14). Could it be that those who oppose the gospel message are not just out there but also within the ranks and file of the Church? It is disheartening to have Church folks who directly attack and oppose the preaching of the gospel and the preachers of the gospel. Thou shalt not devalue the message by trampling it underfoot like wild pigs and the messenger by attacking and mauling them as what scavenging dogs do. For those who are preaching the undiluted gospel of Jesus Christ, BEWARE OF DOGS AND PIGS!!!!!!!!
