The concept of God’s visitation is a highly sought after spiritual experience in modern Christianity. Job says, ‘Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit’. In a world that is moving at rocket speed, a lot of Christians are in danger of trying to move with the times thus abandon AUTHENTIC VISITATIONS from God. Our Lord Jesus Christ literally wept over Jerusalem during the triumphal entry because she failed to know the time of her visitation. May we be like the sons of Issachar who were men who understood the times and what Israel ought to do. I am convinced that a regular dosage of God’s visitation is the only medication or preservative which keeps us fervent in the Lord. Visitation is a season or moment when God shows up in our lives in an extra-ordinary way. My task in this series is to share with you what I consider to be the seven ingredients of AUTHENTIC VISITATION. Why emphasise the word AUTHENTIC? This is due to the many fake claims about God’s visitation being peddled in the religious arena.
1. The first ingredient for authentic visitation is: YOU HAVE TO WANT TO BE VISITED. This is about craving and desiring to be visited. On several occasions Jesus Christ used the WANTING PRINCIPLE before healing people. To the Lame man at Bethesda he asked, DO YOU WANT TO BE HEALED? Blind Bartimeus was asked, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU? In the Old Testament, Zechariah tells the Israelites to ASK the Lord for rain in the season of LATTER RAIN (10:1). He goes on to say that it is the Lord who makes STORM CLOUDS. Joel further prophesies of a season of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the last days (2:28-29). It is believed among Classical Pentecostals that the 1906 Azusa Revival in Los Angeles, United States of America is one of historic landmarks of God’s visitation to His Church. The Psalmist had the WANTING PRINCIPLE in mind when he said, ‘As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you my Lord’ (42:1). The Bride in Song of Songs reiterates the same CRAVING PRINCIPLE (3:1-4). She says, All night long on my bed I looked for the one MY HEART LOVES. When she did not find him, she said I WILL GET UP NOW and I will search for him. Read the rest of the cited verses and you will discover the DRIVE OF DESIRE. Finally, the book of Hebrews gives wise guidance concerning the desire to be visited (13:2). It says, ‘Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing’. One good example of hospitality par excellence is our Father Abraham. It was Abraham’s custom to entertain strangers hence his visitation came through the three men two of which are clearly identified as angels. YOU HAVE TO WANT TO BE VISITED.
