In one of my recent articles I mentioned the importance of Prophetic Audiology i.e. the ability to hear the voice of God in a world which is being bombarded by too many voices. I am persuaded to say that what the Christian Community needs most in this day and age is the STILL SMALL VOICE of God. I am of the opinion that those who have the ability to hear from God have the ability to be custodians of God’s spoken word. This is also true in natural audiology that if you cannot hear, it follows that you can’t speak unless you use sign language. The experience of Prophet Elijah illustrates this greatest need of the Church. Prophet Elijah was highly used by the Lord in the area of demonstrating the power of God. In 1Kings 18 we see Elijah calling upon Yahweh on Mount Carmel and fire came from heaven to consume the bull offering unlike the prophets of baal whose god could not answer with FIREWORKS. Elijah went on to massacre the prophets of baal thus trigger the anger of Queen Jezebel. Elijah was given a twenty four hour notice that Jezebel was going to kill him hence he went to seek refuge in Mount Horeb. Whilst he was there God told Elijah to get out of his cave because the Lord was about to pass by. The Bible says that there was a rock shuttering and mountain tearing wind but the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake but the Lord was not in the earthquake. Finally there was fire but the Lord was not in the fire. Only later did Elijah hear a gentle whisper from the Lord. Could it be that while the demonstration of power through earthquakes, fireworks and whirlwinds is needed for unbelievers to believe and then get saved, it is imperative to note that what these new believers then need thereafter to walk the walk of Christian Faith is the STILL SMALL VOICE. The danger in today’s Christian Community is that there is too much concentration on earthquakes, fireworks and whirlwinds at the expense of the gentle whisper. We have now become like the Church of Laodicea which had shut God out of its Church hence he said, ‘Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice and open the door, I will come and sup with him and he with me’ (Revelation 3:20). The voice of God is now much more difficult to discern because of the commotion of earthquakes, fireworks and whirlwinds. If Elijah could not stand the voice of Jezebel after witnessing fireworks at Mount Carmel, how do we expect to survive the voice of today’s Jezebel? Elijah needed the VOICE OF GOD to override the voice of Jezebel. A lot of Church folks know the voice of the devil more than the voice of God. May we learn the art of meditation without which we cannot hear the gentle whisper from the Lord. The Psalmist says, ‘Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10). Apostle John quotes our Lord’s words ipsissima verba, ‘My sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me’ (John 10:27).
In the School of Prophetic Audiology, those who are learning to hear the still small voice of the Lord need to beware of the following DISTRACTIONS which can impede their hearing:
# The barrier of doubting Thomas
# The barrier of hardline rationalism
# The barrier of being devil conscious rather than being God conscious
# The barrier of living in sin
# The barrier of distancing oneself from God
# The barrier of ignorance of how God speaks
# The barrier of being a busybody
# The barrier of being hooked to social media
In the next article we will deal with practical steps to hearing the still small voice.
